Silent, eco-friendly, fun – these adjectives best describe e-scooters. Since June 15, 2019, these nimble vehicles have been allowed on German roads, making them a great alternative to cars or strenuous cycling. In our insurance article of the week, we'll tell you what you should know before your first ride.
General facts about e-scooters
An e-scooter is essentially an electric kick scooter with a maximum speed of 20 km/h. According to a Federal Council ruling, sidewalks are off-limits; only bike paths may be used both within and outside of towns and cities. If no bike paths are available, the road must be used. E-scooters are treated like bicycles when it comes to parking. Helmets are not mandatory, but wearing one is recommended for safety reasons.
What insurance coverage do I need for my e-scooter?
Fortunately, you don't need a driver's license to operate an e-scooter. However, an insurance sticker is mandatory and must be affixed to the back of the scooter below the taillight. Riding an e-scooter on public roads or squares without an insurance sticker is a punishable offense. The insurance sticker proves that your e-scooter is covered by third-party liability insurance. In the event of an accident, this insurance will cover the costs of the damages incurred by the other party. You can obtain the sticker from your vehicle insurance provider.
Tip: Accident insurance protects you from the consequences of your own injuries after an accident.
Does the insurance coverage also apply abroad?
An e-scooter is also extremely useful on vacation, but remember the insurance coverage: While it's generally covered within the European Union, you should still carry an international insurance certificate – the green card – and attach a "D" sticker to the scooter for added security. Also, check whether e-scooters are permitted on the roads in your holiday destination. If you're traveling to a country outside the EU, you should review your insurance policy or contact your car insurance company directly.
Affordable liability insurance for students
You don't own an e-scooter or a car, so you don't need car insurance – great, but do you have personal liability insurance? While it's not mandatory, it's highly recommended. If someone is injured or their property is damaged, you'll have to pay for everything out of your own pocket without insurance.
